Rebecca Ferguson is absolutely chilling as the smiling villain Rose the Hat, and the scene where she and other literal energy vampires descend upon young Jacob Tremblay is the stuff of nightmares.

Written and directed on a shoestring budget by Sam Raimi, The Evil Dead uses traditional horror tropes to its great advantage, creating a scary, funny, and almost inconceivably bloody story about five college students who encounter a spot of bother in a cabin in the middle of the woods.

That spot of bother includes the unwitting release of a legion of demons upon the world. The Evil Dead rightfully made stars of its creator and lead Bruce Campbell.

The film takes place in , during the English Civil War. A group of soldiers is taken in by a kindly man, who is soon revealed to be an alchemist.

The alchemist takes the soldiers to a vast field of mushrooms where they are subjected to a series of mind-altering, nightmarish visions.

A Field in England is aggressively weird, creative, and best of all clocks in at exactly 90 minutes. Chris Sarandon brings a nice combination of amusement and menace to the role of the bloodsucker, while Planet of the Apes veteran Roddy McDowall is endearing as a washed-up horror host recruited into a real-life horror show.

Much of Fright Night is teen-oriented and somewhat dated, but it still works as a sort of precursor to later post-modern horror gems like Scream.

Green Room is a shockingly conventional horror movie despite not having all of the elements we traditionally associate with them.

There are no monsters or the supernatural in Green Room. Instead all monsters are replaced by vengeful neo-Nazis and the haunted house is replaced by a skinhead punk music club in the middle of nowhere in the Oregon woods.

The band The Aint Rights, led by bassist Pat Anton Yelchin are locked in the green room of club after witnessing a murder and must fight their way out.

This is the movie which introduced chief Cenobite Pinhead played by Doug Bradley — who would return for seven more Hellraiser sequels. But the first is of course, remains the edgiest and the best.

Between Hereditary and The Haunting of Hill House was a great year for turning familial trauma into horror. Written and directed by Ari Aster, Hereditary follows the Graham family as they deal with the death of their secretive grandmother.

As Annie Graham Toni Collette comes to terms with the loss, she begins to realize that she may have inherited a mental illness from her late mother…or something worse.

Hereditary is terrifying because it asks a deceptively simple but truly creepy question: what do we really inherit from our family?

The film was remade in but the original is still the best. Replacing Bela Lugosi as Dracula was not easily done in Filmed in vivid color by director Terence Fisher, Horror of Dracula brought gushing bright red to the movie vampire, which up until then had been mostly relegated to black and white shadows.

Conversely, Abraham Van Helsing was never more dashing than when played by Peter Cushing in this movie. The film turned both into genre stars, and paved the way for a career of doing this dance time and again.

That makes the film feel a little off-balance, although in the end it all becomes quite unnerving. How about surviving a night in a mansion haunted by murder victims and owned by a psychotic millionaire?

Seems like a party trick until people actually start dying. In his follow-up to the cult classic Oculus , Mike Flanagan makes one of the cleverer horror movies on this list.

Hush is a thrilling game of cat-and-mouse with the typical nightmare of a home invasion occurring, yet it also turns conventions of that familiar terror on its head.

For instance, the savvy angle about this movie is Kate Siegel who co-wrote the movie with Flanagan plays Maddie, a deaf and mute woman living in the woods alone.

And still, Maddie proves to be both resourceful and painfully ill-equipped to take him on in this tense battle of wills. Seeing your ex is always uncomfortable, but imagine if your ex-wife invited you to a dinner party with her new husband?

That is just about the least creepy thing in this new, taut thriller nestled in the Hollywood Hills. David apparently wanted to extend the bread-breaking offer personally since he has something he wants to invite both Will and all his other guests into joining.

Part straight up horror, part The Wicker Man , and part anthropological study, Midsommar seems to occupy many genres all at once. But whatever genre Midsommar is, it is a brilliant, and at times deeply disturbing film.

Florence Pugh stars as Dani, a young woman trying to heal in the wake of an enormous tragedy. Dani follows her boyfriend, Christian, and his annoying friends to an important midsummer festival deep in the heart of Sweden.

Christian and company are there partly to get high and have fun and also partly to study the unique, isolated culture for their respective theses.

To say that they get more than they bargained for is an understatement. But Dani may just end up getting exactly what she needs.

Directed By: Dave Franco. Critics Consensus: An intriguing debut for writer-director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour, Black Box compensates for a lack of surprises with strong performances and an emotionally rewarding story.

Critics Consensus: While it may feel muddled at times, The Platform is an inventive and captivating dystopian thriller. Directed By: Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia.

Critics Consensus: Some of its contents are more entertaining than others, but genre fans should still find this Scare Package well worth opening.

Directed By: Aaron B. Critics Consensus: VFW's solid cast, deft direction, and surprisingly weighty subtext add extra heft to a gory thriller that should hold buckets of sanguine appeal for grindhouse fans.

Directed By: Joe Begos. Critics Consensus: Synchronic sets off on an intriguingly idiosyncratic sci-fi journey that should satisfy fans of Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson's earlier work.

Critics Consensus: An intriguing and unsettling debut for writer-director Jeffrey A. Directed By: Jeffrey A.

Directed By: Anvita Dutt. Critics Consensus: Smart, well-acted, and suitably chilling, Scare Me uses its familiar horror setting as the backdrop for a fresh deconstruction of standard genre ingredients.

Directed By: Josh Ruben. Critics Consensus: Using an effectively creepy setting and a beguilingly evasive approach, Koko-Di Koko-Da takes a chilling look at the long tail of grief.

Directed By: Johannes Nyholm. Critics Consensus: 1BR's occasionally ordinary storytelling is more than outweighed by tight direction, interesting ideas, and an effective blend of horror and thoughtful drama.

Directed By: David Marmor. Critics Consensus: If Sea Fever never quite heats up as much as it could, it remains an engrossing, well-acted sci-fi thriller with effective horror elements.

Directed By: Neasa Hardiman. Directed By: Richard Stanley. Critics Consensus: Well-acted, genuinely unsettling, and occasionally even funny, alive proves the crowded zombie genre still has fresh stories to tell.

Directed By: Il Cho. Critics Consensus: Bloody horror with barbed wit, Come to Daddy anchors its brutal violence in a surprisingly mature approach to provocative themes.

Directed By: Ant Timpson. Critics Consensus: Part creature feature, part romance, After Midnight somehow manages to combine its disparate ingredients and come up with something special.

Critics Consensus: Swallow's unconventional approach to exploring domestic ennui is elevated by a well-told story and Haley Bennett's powerful leading performance.

Directed By: Carlo Mirabella-Davis. Critics Consensus: Effective space alien horror with a Soviet-era twist, Sputnik proves there are still some scary good sci-fi thrillers left in the galaxy.

Directed By: Egor Abramenko. Vampires vs. Critics Consensus: In the sharp, socially conscious battle of Vampires vs. Directed By: Osmany Rodriguez.

Critics Consensus: The Wolf of Snow Hollow treads somewhat unsteadily between horror and comedy, but writer-director-star Jim Cummings' unique sensibilities make for an oddly haunting hybrid.

Directed By: Jim Cummings. Critics Consensus: Blood Quantum blends bloody horror with sociopolitical subtext, taking a fresh bite out of the crowded zombie genre in the bargain.

Directed By: Jeff Barnaby. Directed By: Natalie Erika James. Critics Consensus: Smart, well-acted, and above all scary, The Invisible Man proves that sometimes, the classic source material for a fresh reboot can be hiding in plain sight.

Directed By: Leigh Whannell. Critics Consensus: Further refining his provocative vision, writer-director Brandon Cronenberg uses Possessor's potentially over-the-top premise as a delivery mechanism for stylishly disturbing thrills.

Directed By: Brandon Cronenberg. Directed By: Joko Anwar. And the second you spot a hint of the source, away it scurries back into a dark corner, daring you to follow.

Wounds was written and directed by Iranian filmmaker Babak Anvari in his first American outing, after the very good, though more traditional Under the Shadow which featured on a previous list.

With Wounds , Anvari wants to hammer on different, deeper fears, while being far less specific about the details. I watched Greener Grass earlier this summer, expecting a decent alt-comedy.

The neighbors of Greener Grass , all of whom sport adult braces, take the obsession of social politeness to troubling extremes.

When one woman compliments another on her new baby, the mother feels obligated to offer the baby to the other woman. This is one of the opening scenes, and, impressively, the plot devolves from there.

Midnight Kiss is a competent, if slightly generic slasher picture about an old group of friends celebrating their New Years Eve together in a remote Southern California house.

But this installment, directed by Carter Smith, is valuable on its own as an overtly proud queer movie. And there are several pointed, dramatic queer horror films like The Perfection or High Tension.

Rob Zombie has yet to firmly define his place in horror movie history. He directed an utterly boring remake of Halloween.

He also wrote and directed Lords of Salem , one of my all-time favorite witch films. A wayward bunch of carnival workers find themselves held captive in a haunted house full of sadistic villains and limited means of escape.

While far from great, 31 is enthusiastically not bad. As the mother returns from the hospital with bandages on her head, paranoia begins to grow between the brothers that she might be plotting against them.

The film, naturally, escalates from there. Oculus stars the wonderful Karen Gillan Dr. What follows is one of the best psychological thrillers of the decade.

Not only does reality bend and warp, but time folds in on itself, revealing more about the family Kaylie hopes to heal and the evil at the heart of the story.

This is the best of the bunch. Cult movies are great. Contemplative, pensive cult movies are the absolute best. Though only released a few months ago, The Other Lamb is now streaming on Hulu.

As puberty begins to disrupt her place in the severe, yet peaceful, group, she also starts to ask questions about the possibilities of outside life.

This comes at a pivotal time for the squatting commune, as it is evicted from the land and has to search for a new home.

As unease grows against Shepherd played by a typecast Michiel Huisman , so does his tight grip on the group. The Other Lamb might end a bit too abruptly, but that feeling is largely tied to the great enjoyment of watching it.

As the new kid on the block, HBO Max has a long way to go to shore up its horror bonafides. Still, you can find a few lesser-known gems in the bunch.

Its primary interest is to have a bloody good time and, lucky for us, it completely succeeds. The next day she wakes up a little too pregnant, and things go down a very weird, very visceral path from there.

While the script is solid, the movie is made significantly better by the lead performance of Mary Nepi. No part of Snatchers takes itself seriously and the joy that went into making it is obvious on screen.

And that joy, just like whatever is wrong with Sara, is very infectious. Not only does this early psychological thriller successfully create a stirring, bewildering atmosphere, but in it you can see the seeds of so many movies that came after it.

Directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot, Diabolique follows a boarding school teacher played by Simone Signoret, who nervously plots to kill her abusive husband.

Critics Consensus: If its chilly sense of dread never quite becomes spine-tingling terror, Amulet remains smart, solidly disquieting fun for genre fans seeking slow-building horror.

Directed By: Romola Garai. Directed By: Lars Damoiseaux. Critics Consensus: Led by an impressive Riley Keough performance, The Lodge should prove a suitably unsettling destination for fans of darkly atmospheric horror.

Critics Consensus: The Wretched stirs up a savory blend of witch-in-the-woods horror ingredients that should leave genre fans hungry for a second helping from writer-directors Brett and Drew T.

Critics Consensus: The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw compensates for a certain amount of frustrating narrative drift with solid performances and a strong command of mood.

Directed By: Thomas Robert Lee. So much about this tight, mysterious indie seems not to bode well for its quality, from its generic poster to its D-list cast.

The Platform or El Hoya as it is titled in Spain is set within a very tall and very mysterious building, where strangers are held captive for a variety of reasons on each of the many floors.

Twice a day, on the very top floor, a bountiful meal is prepared on a large stone platform. The Platform, directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia in his first feature, wastes no time in exploring the depths of human desperation and greed, even as it strives to highlight efforts at bravery.

But Snowpiercer has a sardonic wit and a fashionably curated aesthetic that does not seem to interest the minds behind The Platform.

This dark tale wants to shove you in the shadows. The result is both an excellent and a troubling watch. This taut, hushed film about two girls left behind at their Catholic boarding school during winter break has an extremely small scale, a mystifying story and a deep undercurrent of Satanism.

It is further elevated by three fantastic leads: a wicked Emma Roberts, a disquieted Lucy Boynton and the always stellar Kiernan Shipka of Mad Men fame.

Told in three acts that dance around each other, it settles on you like a dense fog, leaving you enthralled by what might be hidden and anxious about what might be found.

Don Koch has taken it upon himself to renovate his new suburban house so he and his pregnant wife can start a new life away from their troubled past.

What follows may not terrify viewers, but it still sufficiently entertains. Their desperation drives them to seek treatment at a mysterious, isolated clinic that touts some specialization in whatever ails Eli.

The hope of health buoys the boy, until strange new situations raise new concerns. You may think you know where Eli is going, but it has several tricks up its sleeves.

Its scares can be obvious, and it definitely takes its time to offer anything unique, but once it finally reveals its spark of inspiration, the movie lights up like a bonfire.

This devious movie follows the fascinating world of camgirls, women who create adult internet content via web cams, and the obsession with influencer fame.

She has a solid following and even a few specific fans who shower her with gifts. Things unravel as Alice fights to understand what exactly is happening and how she can stop it.

Those personal details, anxieties and bottomless questions around identity turn this compelling story into a truly gripping movie. Over the past few years, the streaming service has begun investing heavily in horror, and it shows.

Not only has it struck licensing deals to carry some genuinely great films, but it has also worked to establish a rolling tide of original movies through both its anthology series Into the Dark and separately acquired features.

Starring an almost unrecognizable Dylan McDermott, who puts his whole heart into playing a goofy, devout dad, the movie is set 10 years after a rash of similarly styled murders hit a small Kentucky town.

Cold, severe and distressing, The Clovehitch Killer works so well because it is so patient. Just as 10 years have passed between the peak of its past killing spree, so does the evil take its time in showing up onscreen.

Hulu subscribers get access to one of the best indie horror movies released this year. Shortly after the death of their mother played memorably by Alicia Silverstone , two children accompany their father and their new, peculiar stepmom to a remote cabin for Christmas.

The father means it as a trip to bond this new family together, but nature and nurture conspire against that intention as an aggressive snowstorm stands in the way, locking the children and stepmom together.

Discomfort turns to panic, which turns to desperation, which turns to madness. The cacophony of those emotions is as muffled as the constantly falling snow, but just as visible.

In the end it rapturously blurs the real and imagined, casting doubt on what is happening, but never completely hiding the grim reality.

Horror anthologies are always more of a treat than a trick. From a robbery gone wrong, to a bar filled with damned souls, this relentless movie challenges you to look away.

During a particularly bloody bar fight, a group of fleeing college students leave behind a phone. Though most veteran horror fans could guess where the story goes, it takes a different path.

Wounds has a clattering, itchy vibe. And the second you spot a hint of the source, away it scurries back into a dark corner, daring you to follow.
